Encarta was Microsoft's multimedia encyclopedia, launched on CD-ROM in 1993 and built at the start from licensed Funk & Wagnalls material. Encarta '95 packed articles, photographs, maps, audio clips and video onto a single disc, and for plenty of households it was the reason to buy a CD-ROM drive in the first place. Microsoft discontinued the line in 2009.
