MECC was founded in 1973 as the Minnesota Educational Computing Consortium, a state-funded body set up to put computers and software into Minnesota schools, and was later reorganized as the Minnesota Educational Computing Corporation. It published the games that defined the American school computer lab — The Oregon Trail, Number Munchers, Odell Lake, Lemonade Stand — before being sold and absorbed into The Learning Company in the mid-1990s.
