The 88×31 button, 88 pixels wide and 31 tall, was the business card of the early web. Netscape's "Netscape Now!" button is widely credited with starting the trend, and during the browser wars of the late 1990s Netscape and Microsoft turned them into "Best viewed in…" badges that ended up in the footer of nearly every homepage. Plugins, media players, messengers and web hosts all followed with buttons of their own. They faded in the Web 2.0 era, then came back in the early 2020s on Neocities and personal sites, where people still swap them like stickers.
