The compact disc launched in 1982 as a joint Philips and Sony format and then branched into a whole family — CD-ROM, CD-R, CD-RW, Video CD, Enhanced CD. Each variant got its own licensing mark stamped onto the disc, the drive bezel and the jewel case, and between them they became some of the most reproduced graphic design of the twentieth century.
