Duke Nukem began in 1991 as a side-scrolling shareware platformer from Apogee Software, then became a first-person shooter with Duke Nukem 3D in 1996. Built on 3D Realms' Build engine, it filled its levels with breakable scenery, hidden switches and a wisecracking action-movie hero, and became one of the defining PC shooters of the decade.
