The Game Genie was a video game cheat device released in the early 1990s for consoles like the NES, Super NES, Sega Genesis, and Game Boy. It was made by Galoob (in the U.S.) and Codemasters (in the U.K.).
The device plugged in between the game cartridge and the console, letting players enter special codes that altered how the game worked. These codes could give unlimited lives, infinite health, extra items, or let players access hidden parts of a game. It was controversial at first—Nintendo even tried to block its sale in court—but it became very popular and introduced many kids to the idea of modifying games.
