The Game Genie was a video game cheat device released in the early 1990s for the NES, Super NES, Sega Genesis and Game Boy, made by Galoob in the US and Codemasters in the UK. It plugged in between the cartridge and the console and let players enter codes that rewrote how a game worked — unlimited lives, infinite health, extra items, or access to parts of a game you were never meant to reach. Nintendo went to court to try to block its sale and lost, and the device introduced a great many kids to the idea that software could be modified.
