Scorched Earth is a turn-based artillery game written by Wendell Hicken and released as DOS shareware in 1991. Up to ten tanks take turns lobbing shells across a destructible landscape, adjusting angle and power and buying increasingly ridiculous weapons between rounds. It billed itself as "the mother of all games," and a generation of computer labs agreed.
