The Recycle Bin arrived with Windows 95 in August 1995, giving deleted files somewhere to sit before they were really gone. Its desktop icon — a gray wire basket that visibly filled with crumpled paper once it held something — became one of the most universally understood pictures in computing, and stayed recognizably itself for a decade.
