GeoCities started in 1994 as Beverly Hills Internet and gave anyone on the web a free homepage, filed into themed "neighborhoods" — Area51 for sci-fi, SiliconValley for tech, Heartland for family pages. Yahoo! bought it in 1999. The US service closed in 2009 and the Japanese one in 2019, taking millions of hand-built pages with them.
