ICQ — "I Seek You" — was one of the earliest and most popular instant messaging clients, built by Mirabilis in Tel Aviv and released in 1996. Text messages, file transfers and that uh-oh notification sound made it a fixture of early internet communication. AOL bought it in 1998, and the service finally shut down in 2024 after nearly three decades.
