The Year 2000 problem came out of decades of software storing years as two digits, which meant 00 could be read as 1900. Through 1999, governments and companies spent an enormous, unglamorous effort auditing and patching code, and the rest of the world spent New Year's Eve waiting to see whether the lights would stay on. They did — and people have argued ever since about whether that proves the work was necessary or that the panic was.
