Java is a high-level, object-oriented programming language created by James Gosling at Sun Microsystems and first released in 1995. Its "write once, run anywhere" design meant code compiled on one platform could run on any other with a Java virtual machine, no recompiling — which is why, for a few years, half the web had a "This webpage is Java Compatible" badge and a coffee cup on it.
