RealPlayer began life in 1995 as the RealAudio Player from Progressive Networks, later RealNetworks. It was the first streaming media player most people ever used — audio, and soon video, that started playing before it finished downloading, over a modem, at a quality nobody would tolerate now and everybody found astonishing then. It is also remembered, fondly and otherwise, for how hard it was to uninstall.
