Windows 95 could not switch off the machine by itself. When shutdown finished, it left a black screen with an orange line telling you it was now safe to hit the power switch — and you sat there for a second, waiting for permission. ATX power supplies and Windows 98 made the screen unnecessary, and it became one of the quietest, most specific pieces of nostalgia the era produced.
